The first of these four volumes embraces the selections, which are contained in the present work up to the 177th page. The second volume contains ex tracts from Plutarch´s Lives, of which the. Greater Excerpt from The Greek Reader Tre work, from which the following has been prepared, has superseded all others of the kind in Germany, and has been pub lished in several editions in that country, under the title of Elementarbuch der Griechischen Sprache fiir Anfiinger und Geiibtere, in four volumes. The first of these four volumes embraces the selections, which are contained in the present work up to the 177th page. The second volume contains ex tracts from Plutarch´s Lives, of which the. Greater part are also transferred to the present volume. The remainder of the second volume of the Elementarbuch, is filled with extracts from Xeno phon, Herodotus, and Thucydides, which are omitted here, both that. The Work might not be swelled beyond its proper size, and because several of the extracts from these authors ap pear scardely adapted to the degree of proficiency, expected at our schools. From the third volume of the Elementarbuch, which bears in the original the name of Socrates, and contains extracts from Plato and other Greek philosophers, nothing has been taken, for the same reasons.
