Inder Dan Ratnu's third novel, First Lady President , is the story of a controversial American First Lady and powerful US Senator's quest for the sole political prize that eluded her ambitious grasp :the presidency of the United States. Written back in 2003 this book's story explains how the lady candidate confronts an African American man challenger and defeats him in the primaries only to pick him up as her vice presidential running mate. Later in the main election she confronts another African American man a retired Army chief and a former Secretary of State, a 'liberal' republican only to defeat by an unprecedented record breaking margin in the US presidential history. Her landslide victory follows, amid unprecedented security measures, her inauguration and her inaugural speech during the day time and an unusual celebration during the night. First Lady President wasI written back in 2003. I sent this book to Barack Obama on 25th April ,2007 . In this book I visualized the rise of a lady candidate in democratic party (named- Beverly Hilton--a former First Lady)in a fictional US presidential election and an African American man(named Charak Sudama-- a Senator from Illinois) as a challenger to her within the same party. In the story of the book impressed and "inspired" by a keynote speech which is based upon "anti-war" theme she picks him up as her vice presidential running mate . The ninth chapter of the book (starting on page 93) is titled "Democratic Convention and Beverly Hilton's Nomination Acceptance Speech" which is divided into two major portions . The first is a speech by Senator Charak Sudama on "war" issue where he emphasizes that Chirag war (equivalent of Iraq war) was a great blunder and it could have been averted with wisdom, restraint , moderation and toleration on the part of the United States and its republican administration. It is the longest speech in the book . Nearly double the length of the longest speech of Beverly Hilton who is the central character of the book . So much of importance was given to Charak Sudama who was essentially a 'side-character' in the book only to be mentioned in this chapter .He mentions with an emphasis it was wrong to go in for this war in the very first place . The second part of the above mentioned chapter is comprised of Beverly Hilton's nomination acceptance speech which is based upon the theme of "CHANGE." She elaborates all the changes she was determined to bring about contrasting them with the policy of the incumbent administration and towards the end of the speech she concludes with an emphasizes (as it is highlighted in bold letters) -- "If I return to the White House ,it will not be a mere CHANGE of gender of the office holder. It will be a genuine CHANGE in the quality of the life of the American people." Therefore "anti-war" and "change" are the two MAJOR points upon which is based A MAJOR and one of the most important chapters of the book; and these were the two major points which Senator Obama never forgot to mention in every speech he delivered during the primaries which were concluded a few weeks ago ,and he is unlikely to forget to mention them in the general elections that are to follow .It is now well known to everyone that Mr Obama's victory over Hillary Clinton was due to these two major points. Instead of inspiring the lady as given in the book Obama used the "anti-war" stand to prove her wrong and himself right thus making the very base of his election campaign against her. And then what was meant for the lady candidate the idea of "change" he used to promote his own cause . This was how reality differed from the fiction. In the speech on the "anti-war" theme delivered by Charak Sudama on page 98 there is the only major portion which is highlighted in bold letters in the entire speech of eight pages. It reads: "If we can be friendly with Libya without a regime change ,why can't we be friendly with Syria? If we can well put up with Saudi Arabia with its fanatic leanings and reliance upon an ancient style of autocracy and be their 'ally,' why can't we then put up with the fanatics of Iran? Why can't we at least be 'friendly' to them if not allies? Or at least avoid dealing with them as 'enemies?" It may be recalled that Mr Obama issued a major foreign policy statement in which he promised to start negotiations with Syria and Iran without any pre-conditions. It appears that this statement of Mr Obama sprang directly from the above para which is a highlighted one in the book .Incidentally ,in this very book five years back I visualized "a white lady" as a vice presidential running mate in the republican party which was revealed true only about ten days back. I had sent the book at the start of the primaries of this election by registered post from India to Mr Obama's Senate address. It was unlikely that it was lost on the way. It was also equally unlikely that such a relevant book(the only one about this election and about who was to be his greatest rival in the election) could have been thrown into garbage . It certainly must have been read either by the speech writers of Obama or by himself .In either case this book has already "influenced" this US presidential election and I can say with absolute cetainly that the book First Lady President has been used by Sen .Obama to defeat Senator Clinton in the primaries. It is a great honor done to the book by Sen. Obama. First Lady President is Inder Dan Ratnu's latest but not quite recent book. It was conceived back in the year 2000 on the day when Mr George W Bush was declared 'elected' as the president of USA . It was written from in May 2003 , edited until September 2003 and its first edition was published by Terraplane Publications ,South Carolina,USA in May 2004. It’s second (revised)edition was self published by the author in India in March ,2007 and then its third edition (the same as the second) was published by Iuiverse,USA in first quarter of 2008. First Lady President was written in the past tense, but in fact it was a vision into the future. A fictional take on a full US presidential election campaign of a woman candidate and her eventual victory in the election by a record margin clinched through picking an african American man as her running mate .It followed by a record gathering of over a million people at their inauguration at the capitol hill in the day followed in turn by an interesting and an unusual celebration in the night . First Lady President is ,in fact ,an intellectual gift of India to the American people in the form of a book. It has been deliberately devised by its author, a common man of India, to lift up through liberty, and thus promote the cause of women and african american folks both competing for the most powerful post of the world -- the presidency of the United States of America. It is though an "imaginary" story, yet can well serve to boost up the morale of those who in the USA want to and are working for promoting the cause and for heightening the prospects of these two largely ignored (in respect to the presidency) but unignorable, powerful sections of American society. And it did serve to do so in the 2008 presidential election. Authored by an Indian -- Inder Dan Ratnu from Rajasthan state -- and edited by an American --Michael Burchett of South Carolina state -- First Lady President is a supreme example of Indo-American intellectual collaboration in the internet age between two individual common citizens of the two greatest democracies located on the opposite sides of the globe to each other. This might well emerge as interesting a work among the political fictions of the world as is the emergence of the personality of Hillary Clinton among the political celebrities of the USA -- absolutely unique and unparallelled. Thus two common citizens of two greatest democracies -- representing both the East and the West in this cyber age -- have successfully collaborated for the promotion of the cause OF FREEDOM, FOR FREEDOM and BY FREEDOM -- to churn out a work named First Lady President.
