Through their friendship, and with a nudge from an extremely odd psychiatrist, Charlotte is finally able to feel okay being ridiculous, and is finally able to reconcile her grieving process with the process of bringing a new baby into the world. They learned everything there was to know about each other over the course of no more than two weeks. Grief has a way of making people more talkative than they normally might be, and Charlotte found herself pouring her heart out to this woman whom she had despised only a few short weeks before. Roz knew something that seems obvious, but only becomes clear to most people after far too many years. She knew that the best thing she could be was a willing ear. When a person who is not only grieving, but going through a pregnancy, there is much to talk about. She understood that Charlotte was going through two of the most difficult processes a person can be asked to go through, and hadn’t had anyone to talk to about it since her husband had passed. She had seen the girl’s parents hanging about the day of the funeral. They hadn’t even taken the sanctity of the moment as a sign that perhaps their petty, years-old marital arguments might be best left at the door. She had shook her head at the old fools, but had sympathized with them. She had been there too. A few days after the funeral, she noticed that Charlotte was entirely alone. She watched as Charlotte got in her SUV and drove to her doctor’s appointment all by herself, and she watched Charlotte sit on her back porch and eat fruit while reading her pregnancy books. At least the girl was still taking care of herself. She still understood the responsibility of being pregnant, however unfair her situation was. And Charlotte knew how unfair her situation was. She told Roz so. They sat on the back porch where Charlotte had once enjoyed having weekend morning coffee with her husband and talked for hours. “It’s just,” she sighed. “It’s bull you know? I’m calling bull. It’s the worst joke possible. I should have known right? Everything was so perfect. We were Leave it to Beaver in the flesh. We met. We fell in love. We got married. We got a house.
