This year, my wife Diane and I decided to share everything that we've learned about management to help people who work with a difficult manager to learn simple, specific hacks for their specific manager type so they’re not so miserable and frustrated at work anymore. Our management journey began in our late 20's while volunteering for a small personal development organization based in Chicago. We were on a team of newbie marketers that would do just about anything to enroll people in these very highly motivating workshops and seminars. Although we weren’t paid to do the marketing, in exchange for our effort we were allowed to attend the seminars and get coaching help with our goals…for free. While we were involved in that organization, as volunteers, we learned a lot about the how-to mechanics and the psychology around how to put ourselves out there in life and not only pursue but to achieve our dreams and goals. However, the big secret we learned (on top of setting clear and exciting goals) was all about “people” and how to create super high-quality relationships. As a result, everything in our lives started working. We got better jobs, started a few small businesses, we patched up every single relationship we had screwed up in the past and completely changed the direction of our life. So, naturally, we wanted to help everyone we could. We met a lot of frustrated people along the way and because of what we had learned in theory and what we had done practically, we were able to help people change their life too. We were on a mission to share our knowledge and help people that didn’t know what we now knew. We knew it wasn’t that people were screwed up, it was simply that they didn’t know. Eventually, we became their international team managers and over the following 10+ years we helped to grow that organization from one small location in Chicago to a global nine-city network that had thousands of people participating every year.
