Von Händler/Antiquariat, Peter Harrington.
Paris: Chez H. Agasse, imprimeur-libraire, 1802. The standard French translation, "since regarded as a classic" First edition of Garnier's translation, which became the standard French text. His notes and observations were translated for the Glasgow English-language edition of 1805 and frequently reprinted in both French and English editions. The Wealth of Nations was first published in English in 1776 and translated into French in 1778-9. Other French translations followed, but it is Garnier's which is "the one since regarded as a classic" (Carpenter, p. lvi). The entire fifth volume comprises Garnier's notes and commentary, and it opens with a lengthy preface, placing Smith in the context of French economists, showing the relationship of Smith to France, and recommending a method of reading the work in a different order to the chapters as published. Carpenter notes another superficially similar edition with the errata corrected. 5 volumes, octavo (197 x 121 mm). Contemporary streaked sheep, twin red morocco labels, gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, blue speckled edges. Portrait frontispiece; complete with half-titles and errata. Front pastedowns with early bookseller's ticket of Grosclaude in Metz and contemporary armorial bookplate lettered "L de Rambures", from Château de Rambures in the Somme. Joints and extremities neatly restored, some creasing to pages in vol. II, a couple of instances of offsetting from inserts, 2 leaves of manuscript notes bound following title page and 1 leaf preceding errata in vol. V. A very good copy. Einaudi 5340; Goldsmiths' 18412; Kress B.4604; Vanderblue, p. 25. Kenneth E. Carpenter, The Dissemination of the Wealth of Nations in French and in France, 1776-1843, 2002.
