When tragedy strikes, people react in many different ways. For New Yorkers after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, there was an overwhelming sense of grief that was shared by much of the world as it watched helplessly. But there was also a sense of hope that arose when people of all races and nationalities came together to support one another. Russia Sheds Tears for Americans author Marianne Troia is a native New Yorker and witnessed this phenomenon first-hand. She relates her experiences and shares a discovery that she made in 2009. Some 9/11 memorials have been very well publicized, but she found one that seemed to fly just below the radar: "To the Struggle Against World Terrorism" or "The Tear Drop Memorial" erected in Bayonne, New Jersey. Troia determined that the world needed to know about this monument and set about researching its origins. She found that the Tear Drop Memorial was a gift from the Russian government, created by artist Zurab Tsereteli, and dedicated in 2006. A freelance photographer, Troia also took many beautiful photographs of the Tear Drop to fill the pages of Russia Sheds Tears for America. You can see it from every angle and really admire the craftsmanship and artistry as well as the surroundings. The monument itself is something to behold at 100 feet tall. The tower is designed to look as though it is split by a jagged opening with a large, 40 foot tall, nickel-plated tear drop hanging inside. One of the most interesting photos is a close-up of the tear and the shining reflections around it (which include other installations on the site).
