The story takes place in the desert on the planet Dartha. It focuses around the main character Che and is narrated by Jules Averies. Even though these are the main characters there are many different people involved with a band of rebels. Che’s main enemy through the story is General Coriss. Averies tells Che that Coriss sold information causing him to be captured. He also sold information that caused the death of Che’s long time friend and mentor, Jock Muldoer. Averies tells Che the Empire will provide military supplies so he has the opportunity to seek revenge. With much regret Che accepts the aid, but he is surprised when his friend, Tuc, wants to build a mobile base. Neither one of them realize how big a project it will become. As the story unfolds Che meets his love interest, Wendi, at the Red Door Inn. He tries to talk her out of joining him, but she has a hidden past that forces her forward. New members are added to the band and the mobile base soon turns into a floating city. As the personalities on the base become more relevant Che has trouble grasping a solution. As the story reaches its climax Che is forced to face his real enemy. He realizes he has labored under a tower of hate all his life. His friend Tuc tells him it will destroy him if he does not find a way to deal with it. After facing the truth, Che and his band is involved in a final battle for their lives.
