Language: English. Brand new Book. The desire for happiness and inner peace is universally felt, but will not be fulfilled without a deep understanding of how the human mind works. We are creations of Nature, and are blessed with many abilities not especially apparent in other creatures, one of which is a very heightened sense of self-consciousness. To be self-conscious means that we are aware, but at the same time aware that we are. This creates a subtle psychological ambiguity which profoundly affects our sense of identity and agency. We are animals who possess a unique ability to imagine and create things. We can think and use language, enabling us to construct a fixed mental view which we consider to be "objective" and true. To be immersed in this activity creates the illusion of the interior subject, or "self", a mental and emotional construct that gives rise to a number of unintended and largely unconscious consequences. In effect, each of us becomes unknowingly confined within a virtual "prison" devised by our own minds. In defiance of all common sense, if we once clearly see without the illusion of "self", we are freed, as if by a miracle. This transformation is the central aim of Buddhism and other non-dual "religions", which are in essence not religions at all, as we normally think of that term. They are ways of liberation which encourage us to intimately investigate the nature of awareness and self-consciousness, and the role that thought plays in the formation of our conflicted, individual identities. Enclosed within our normal, self-centered view of existence is a deeper awareness that is immanently simple, pristine and universal. It is an ever-waiting portal to the fundamental wonder and compassionate delight of existence. Once we touch it, our viewpoint is forever changed; we are thrust into a new way to experience, for the spirit which gives form to the miracle of life has been revealed. This book arose as a more secular attempt to share this understanding. Its intent is to clarify and synthesize insights gathered from science and psychology, as well as the commentary of a host of numerous teachers of non-duality, all of whom have shared an ultimately ineffable, but powerfully liberative insight into the nature of human knowing. Lastly, it is a narrative that is informed by the unfolding of my own "spiritual" liberation. Though having no formal certification as a teacher, I have been a good student, and have learned from the greatest teacher of all, simple observation of basic awareness and the myriad ways by which it can be expressed. For me, the result has been dramatically mind-changing. And I am absolutely certain that at its deepest level, my mind is not at all different from your own. Though I make frequent reference to "Buddhist" ideas, I ask that you not be put off by that, if you are. The kind of "Buddhism" referenced here is not exotic, idolatrous or otherworldly. It is an inquiry more psychological than religious, and the valuable insights it fosters are perceptible in a most direct and down-to-earth way. My words will hopefully strike a hidden chord with those who are already involved in "non-dual" spiritual practices meant to restore the mind's natural unity. But they should be equally useful to anyone interested in more deeply understanding how the human mind works. My hope is that through consideration of some of the subtleties implicit in language and thought, especially as revealed in the act of seeking, the bonds of your own conscious mind will be thoroughly broken. Emptied of "self", awareness is spacious and transparent. Purified by silence, our spirit is liberated to find its foundation in immeasurable, eternal peace.

The desire for happiness and inner peace is universal but will not be fulfilled without a deep understanding of how the human mind works. We are created by Nature, and are blessed with many abilities not especially apparent in other creatures, one of which is an often painfully acute sense of self-consciousness. To be self-conscious means that we are aware, but at the same time aware that we are. This creates a subtle psychological ambiguity which profoundly affects our sense of both identity and agency. We are animals who possess a unique ability to imagine and create things. We can think and use language, enabling us to form fixed mental pictures of what we and the world as experienced are. This objective view creates the illusion of the interior subject - the self - a mental and emotional construct that gives rise to a number of unintended and largely unconscious consequences. In effect, each of us becomes unknowingly confined within a virtual prison constructed by our own minds. In defiance of all common sense, if we once clearly see through, and then without the illusion of self, we are freed, as if by a miracle. This transformation is the central aim of Buddhism and other non-dual religions, which are in essence not religions at all, as we normally think of that term. They are ways of liberation which encourage us to intimately examine awareness, self-consciousness, and the role that thought plays in the formation of individual identity. It is an ever-waiting portal to the fundamental wonder and compassionate delight of existence. Once we touch it, our viewpoint is forever changed, and we are thrust into a new way to experience, for we have unveiled the spirit which gives form to the very miracle of life.
