Beryl Markham, a pioneer aviator, was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean from London to North America. In the late 20s after her first marriage failed, she returned to Kenya where she met and befriended Denys Finch Hatton, a well-known big-game hunter.Karen Blixen was a friend and confidant to Beryl Markham, seventeen years younger. Beryl first stayed at Karen Blixen's home in 1923. When she married Mansfield Markham (the second of her three marriages) in 1927, Karen Blixen lent her house for the honeymoon. In 1928 Beryl, five months pregnant, was invited to dine at Karen Blixen's house with Denys Finch Hatton and the Prince of Wales (later Duke of Windsor). In 1930 Finch Hatton received his pilot's license and bought a Gypsy Moth airplane. He would entertain friends with airplane rides, including Dinesen and Markham. Markham found the experience so thrilling she took lessons and acquired her own pilot's license. In 1942, she published her memoirs which appeared on 13 best-seller lists. West with the Night tells the story of Markham's childhood in Kenya, her unconventional career as a bush pilot, and her pioneering transatlantic flight. Eventually sales began to decline, and the book was forgotten. She died in Kenya in 1986 at the age of 84. Beryl Markham was born Beryl Clutterbuck in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England, the daughter of Charles and Clara Clutterbuck. When she was four years old, her father moved the family to Kenya, which was then British East Africa. Although her mother disliked the isolation and promptly returned to England, Beryl stayed in Kenya with her father, where she spent an adventurous childhood learning, playing and hunting with the natives. On her family's farm, she developed a knowledge of, and love for horses. As a young adult, she trained horses, becoming the first licensed female horse trainer in Kenya. She later took up flying, becoming a bush pilot and the first person to fly the Atlantic Ocean east to west (solo non-stop flight). These experiences were chronicled in her critically acclaimed memoir, West With The Night, published in 1942. There are some questions that Markham is the real author of her memoir West With The Night. According to the 1993 biography, "The Lives of Beryl Markham," by Errol Trzebinski, the book's real author was her third husband, the ghost writer and journalist Raoul Schumacher. Trzebinski also claimed that Beryl Markham had an advance from Houghton Mifflin to do a book on the famous international jockey Tod Sloan, that Raoul Schumacher was supposed to write. Apparently Schumacher never did, and she was forced to go it alone, resulting in a manuscript submission that the publisher rejected as worthless, and not from the same person who had written West With The Night. Author Mary S. Lovell, who visited and stayed with Markham in Kenya shortly before Markham's death in 1986, expressed no doubts in Markham's biography that she was the sole author, although her third husband did edit the manuscript - but not in a major way. [Read by Anna Fields] As rich and inspiring as when it was first written, West with the Night captures the spirit of a true pioneer woman. This beautifully written autobiography brings us the remarkable life story of Beryl Markham, the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west. Brought up on a farm in Kenya, Markham chose to stay in Africa when, at seventeen, her father lost their farm and went to Peru. She began an apprenticeship as a racehorse trainer which turned into a highly successful career. In her twenties, Markham gave up horses for airplanes and became the first woman in East Africa to be granted a commercial pilot's license, piloting passengers and supplies in a small plane to remote corners of Africa. , Hardcover, Edition: Abridged Ed, Format: Import, Label: Easton Press, Easton Press, Product group: Book, Published: 1989, Studio: Easton Press, Sales rank: 1808746.
