People crave authenticity from their institutions and those who represent these institutions. For the church, this is an especially critical issue. No longer will society offer an automatic deference and acceptance of church authority - even by loyal church members. People are unwilling to accept a high handed, or unfeeling exercise of authority. They are also unwilling to accept teachings that do not appear to be an integral part of the Gospel message. Priestly celibacy is one of these.... I left the active ministry because I committed the "unforgivable sin" of falling in love and wanting to marry. Unexpected by me, my ministry continues. I am approached almost daily by people seeking advice in spiritual matters, especially in the areas of sex in marriage. They seek my counsel rather than their local parish priest, leaving that I can better understand their problems. Whether this perception is justified, I will not judge. I am happy to minister to them. Writing this book has been a difficult task for me. I should not have done so without the help of many wonderful people.... Cardinal John Henry Newman said, "to grow is to change, and to grow perfect is to change often." This is true for both individuals and institutions.
