Getting a book published these days is a difficult task. More people than ever before are writing books. HarperCollins, for instance, receives about 14,000 manuscripts a year but publishes only about 15 books. Unfortunately, while competition in the book market has grown, readership has dropped. People who, 50 years ago, would buy and read a book for information or entertainment, now turn to radio, television and the Internet for these purposes. Not to long ago, David Wilkening of The Weekly, changed the title of Majorie Kinnan Rawling's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Yearling, and submitted it to twenty-two large publishing houses. Twenty-one of the 22 publishers either rejected it or ignored it. Number 22 realized it was an already published book. Not one offered to publish it or even recognized it as quality material. David Wilkening discovered what thousands of excellent writers already know. The larger publishing houses want only authors with a prove! n track record of high sales or books written by high profile celebrities. Now days, the quality of the writing or the attributes of the book's content has absolutely no baring on the decision to publish a book. Most people are unaware that the publishing industry has undergone significant changes in the last 30 years. It seems that books continue to be published the same old way, and in one sense that is true. The physical structure of books have changed hardly at all in nearly one hundred years. However, someone attempting to get their work published today probably suspects that things have changed a good deal. They, too, would be right. The truth is, books look about the same but the publishing industry has changed dramatically. In response to this, many small publishing companies have emerged, but even they cannot afford to publish books of great literary value if they do not promise volume sales. In frustration, many authors have learned how to publish their own books. Some have even started their own small publishing company to help other emerging authors. Publishing and promoting a book is expensive, and self publishing, is no exception. However, as Linda and Jim Salisbury point out in their book, Smart Self-publishing, "If you don't have enough faith in your book to consider investing in it yourself, why should you think publishing houses will put money into it?" It is a question every author should ask whether they intend to publish the book on their own or submit it to an established publisher. Writers must accept the fact that a book is a product and no one is going to invest in a product that offers no potential return on investment. Over 100,000,000 people now use the Internet as a principal resource for information, for entertainment and for buying commodities. This number is growing by the thousands every day. Few people doubt that the Internet will be the primary market of tomorrow for anyone wishing to buy or sell goods. Within a few years the number of people using the Internet will jump to nearly a billion as the Internet becomes another feature on everyone's television set, not just in the United States, but all over the world. Publishing and promoting a book on the Internet offers the author several advantages over conventional publishing methods, not the least of which is cost. A book published and promoted on the Internet will cost between one-third and one-sixth that anticipated for the conventional method of producing and promoting a book. In addition, the author can get much greater exposure for his/her book on the Internet, especially if it has special appeal to a specific group of people. Finally, all books sold on the Internet are sold at retail rather then wholesale giving the author or publisher a bigger profit on each book sold. Authors need not have any knowledge of the Internet to publish a book through this medium. They do not even need to own or use a computer. Publishing on the Internet offers the writer the same options as publi! shing through standard methods. One can chose a publishing house to do most or all of the publishing and promoting of the book or he/she can self publish. Many authors prefer self-publishing because it gives them control over how the book is designed and published. In the book publishing business, he who puts up the cash controls the book. Even when self publishing, one need not have access to the Internet or a computer although most will find it desirable. This book is written to assist an author publish his/her book regardless of which option is chosen.
