Welcome to Haunting Tales, recorded during "Literally, a Haunted House," produced each October to raise funds for The Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site in New Albany, Indiana. In 1867, for about $120,000, William S. Culbertson built his three-story, twenty-five room home. With its hand-painted ceilings, carved rosewood staircase, and marble fireplaces, his home re-flected his affluence. After his death in 1892, the mansion and its contents were sold. A series of owners painted white paint over the hand-painted ceilings and boarded up rooms. Since 1985 this annual event, rated a "Top 10 Halloween Haunted House" in *USA Today* 1991, generates funds to restore the mansion to its Victorian era glory. While brave souls wait to enter the 'haunted' carriage house, many visit the formal parlor to hear spooky stories which could have been told in Victorian days. *Haunting Tales*, recorded over a series of haunted house evenings, features stories told by Mary Hamilton to a variety of family, teen and adult audiences. SIDE 1 Featuring the ghastly Graveyard Worm, "Saner is from WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT... The Beaded Bag is Mary's Victorian era adaptation of "The Vanishing Hitchhiker," a familiar urban legend. With a plot reminiscent of "The Hairy Toe" and "The Golden Arm," TaIlypo is a traditional southern United States folktale. Mary's source for the counting compulsion superstition is Mattie Hampton of Grand Rapids, Michigan... SIDE 2 Adapted from "Sop Doll," THE JACK TALES by Richard Chase.... With additional thanks to... Mary Frasier, Bloomington, IN source of the cat in the smoke ending. Promises to Keep is historical fiction inspired by an eerie Civil War tale [from] Breathitt County, Kentucky. "The Men in the Open Grave"... first appeared in GHOSTS ALONG THE CUMBERLAND by William Lynwood Montel...
