Boldt Yacht House 1-887287-05-1 publication was introduced to the public in 2006. It contains twice as much information as this author's Boldt s Boats publication 1-8877287-01-) which is now out of print. The front cover is a reproduced 1905 colored photograph of the Boldt Yacht House The Boldt Yacht House book alphabetically lists the over 60 watercraft once owned by George C. Boldt and his family as well as the history of this landmark structure which is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. 31 of the boats had names, so they are listed in the book alphabetically, which shows blueprints of some of the vessels. The Boldt Yacht House is directly across from Boldt Castle at Alexandria Bay, New York in the Thousand Islands, and opened to visitors on June 21, 1996. Over 40,000 people visit the structure from mid-May to mid October each year. A total of 150 pictures are included in this 121-page book which measures 7 and 1/2 inches by 8 and 1/2 inches in size. Colored pictures are on the front and back covers only. A description of each boat, where it was built, what it was used for, and what has happened to them is the context of this publication. Four of Mr. Boldt s boats still exist and are all owned by the Antique Boat Museum of Clayton, New York. Three of these boats are on display at the Boldt Yacht House. Mr. Boldt lived from1851 to 1916. Construction of the Boldt Yacht House, shown on the front cover of the book, was begun in November, 1899. The three boats that Mr. Boldt owned and on display in the Yacht House are: the "P.D.Q.", built in 1904, and two 1910 number boat called "That " and "This ". The fourth is the "LaDucesse " and was owned by Mr. Andrew McNally, Chairman Emeritus of Rand McNally. He used it as his summer home at his Thousand Island estate. He acquired it in 1943 and it was donated to the Antique Boat Museum after his death in November 15, 2001.The Antique Boat Museum is open to the public from mid-May to mid October each year, and is in Clayton, New York. It has North America's largest collection of antique wooden boats. People from all over the world come to the museum the first week-end of August for their annual show. One of the moat prized of the Boldt fleet of vessels was the very elegant 102 foot yacht Louise and was a combination steam and sailing yacht which was designed and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company at Bristol, Rhode Island in 1893. Construction was wood. Her specifications were as follows: net 24 tons, gross tons, 49; over all length, 102 feet; waterline length, 84 feet. Her beam was 14 feet; depth 8 feet 2 inches; draft 4 feet 4 inches. Her power plant was a 3 cylinder triple expansion steam engine, 5 and 5/8 inch, 9 and 14 by 9 which was also built at the Herreshoff plant. On each side of the boiler were coal bunkers. Above the engine room was a skylight. There were 18 portholes in all, 9 on each side of the vessel. Legend has it that it was on board the Louise that the Thousand Island Dressing was created. It is believed that it was George C. Boldt, of the famous Boldt Castle that named it "Thousand Island Dressing." His steward created the dressing while sailing on the St. Lawrence River one afternoon. George C. Boldt was the proprietor of the world famous Waldorf and Astoria hotels in New York City, and the owner and proprietor of the equally world famous Bellevue and Stratford hotels in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where the dressing would gain world wide popularity. It was George C. Boldt tug boat Queen that proved to be the work horse of the fleet. Built in Buffalo, New York in 1897, Boldt purchased the Queen from its builder for $4,900.00 on November 22, 1900. The Queen was used for towing scows of stone from Oak Island to Heart Island for the building of Boldt Castle. Barge after barge of, Perfect Paperback, Edition: First Edition, Label: Linda M.
