used books, books, 2004 Artpace Residencies and Exhibitions, Since Artpace's inception in 1995, a fundamental part of the program has been the participation of guest curators. Each year, we invite three arts professionals from around the world to select the artists for our International Artist-in-Residence (IAIR) program. They have few guidelines other than that one artist must be from Texas, another from anywhere in the United States, and a third from any country in the world. This approach has resulted in a diverse and dynamic group of residents over the years, and it has made Artpace a fluid, responsive, and slightly unpredictable organization in terms of its programs and exhibitions. The curators are not only responsible for selecting the artists who come to live and work in our facilities each year; they are also tasked with producing the first critical writing about the work that results. For nearly a decade, these essays appeared in illustrated brochures--modest in scale but comprehensive in scope--reflecting the integral role of curatorial practice in the presentation of each resident's project. By 2004, Artpace's exhibition program had grown beyond the residency to include installations in the Hudson (Show)Room and WindowWorks spaces. We felt that the significance of the documentation and critical interpretation of Artpace shows demanded a more visible and enduring platform. We are therefore pleased to introduce with this volume a series of richly illustrated and documented books that will fully communicate the history.

In 1995, when Artpace opened as a visual arts organization devoted to producing projects with artists from around the world, it was by no means a foregone conclusion that the concept was either viable or sustainable. To begin with, San Antonio was not a destination for international contemporary art, and attracting talent to live and work here for even a limited time seemed potentially challenging. Moreover, Artpace's commitment to freedom of expression emerged amid the infamous culture wars in the United States. The relationship between funders and content providers was so severely strained by ideological differences that our very mission seemed--absurdly--contentious. But Linda Pace was a bold and visionary artist, collector, and businesswoman who so steadfastly believed in the importance of supporting artists and their work that she was able to carry Artpace through its nascent stages to become a magnet for a broader base of private, foundation, and government support. And artists, as it turns out, were glad to come. So too were audiences. It is with particular pride, therefore, that with this volume we observe our tenth anniversary. --Matthew Drutt, Executive Director, Artpace International Artist-in-Residence (IAIR) 05.1: Daniel J.
