During the summer of 1962, Alan Feinstein, a Manhattan dentist with a lifelong commitment to social and political activism, as well as intellecutual curiosity, traveled to Africa. He went armed with letters of introduction from Aminu Kano, one of the leading nationalist figures in Nigeria. It was a remarkable journey of cultural discovery that changed his life, opened new political horizons resulting in classic study of the life and times of his friend and political soul mate, Aminu Kano, "African Revolutionary" - which was also a well-received study of British colonialism and Nigeria's choatic politics. But aside from becoming an Africanist, Feinstein was very much involved in the progressive politics of his day - from serving as a dedicated army officer to resisting the predations of McCarthyism and joining in the Civil Rights Movement. His reputation was such that when he died in 1996, tributes came from the likes of Boutros-Boutros Ghali, the then UN Secretary General who contributed an Afterword, the international novelist Chinua Achebe, Ibrahim Gambari, Nigeria's ambassador to the UN, Donal Easum, US Ambassador to Nigeria, David Dinkins, former Mayor of New York, and dozens of others..
