From November, 1944, to May, 1945, the last seven months of World War II in Europe, nearly 30,000 American and French airmen fought together in the First Tactical Air Force (Provisional) a unique organization born of expediency. This book tells their story. First TACAF was hastily formed in southeastern France to provide air support and cooperation with the Franco-American Sixth Army Group which included the U.S. Seventh Army and the French First Army. Major units assigned were XII Tactical Air Command, controlling five former Twelfth and Ninth Air Force P-47 Thunderbolt groups through its 64th Fighter Wing; the First French Air Corps (FFAC) with its three P-47 groups;  four B-26 Marauder groups, two from the Twelfth and two from FFAC's II Brigade de Bombardment, all under 42nd Bomb Wing; and, the Western French Air Forces (WFAF). This is a chronological account of the ground and air war along the often forgotten southern front. Tannehill writes of the many difficulties the provisional air force faced. Its units got few replacements, aircrew had to continue to fly combat missions without relief and many of its ground and support personnel were tiring after being overseas for 24 months. Its aircraft were war-weary. Supplies were hard to get. Bad weather was the worst problem. Europe was experiencing its most severe winter in 30 years, with record-breaking cold, snow, ice and fog. Still, aircraft were serviced and flown even in "unflyable" conditions. The provisional air force was hampered by lack of continuity in leadership: it had three different commanding officers. An "ad hoc" force to begin with, it was loosely organized with a sometimes blurred chain-of-command due to the fluid front, often chaotic combat situations and fighter groups coming and going. Virtually unknown and usually unsung, First TACAF was a necessarily cobbled-together amalgamation of U.S. and French, vastly different in organization, leadership styles, language and temperament. This book is a tribute to the aircrew, ground crew and Service squadron men of the provisional air force who worked together so successfully in carrying out their duties. Tannehill draws on research into Official records, personal diaries and interviews with veterans for First TACAF. The book has nearly 500 black-and-white photographs of people, places and planes--most never before published.  Included are eight pages of color photos and aircraft profiles. Numerous "sidebar" stories, plus charts, maps and artwork, give an in-depth look at combat action. First TACAF is 8 1/2" x 11" x 1/2", printed on glossy stock, softbound with color card covers.
