E.T.A. Hoffmann's famous tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King may seem almost over-familiar as the inspiration for TcHaikovsky's equally famous ballet (in fact based on a French retelling of Hoffmann's original German tale). However, its translation is rarely ever entire. This edition displays the full range of Hoffmann's quirky powers of invention. Here is the whole text in English, together with another less known tale, The Strange Child, in which Felix and Christlieb, the son and daughter of a country gentleman, Sir Thaddeus, meet a child in the woods. To Felix their new playmate appears a boy, to Christlieb another little girl. They are not the first of their family to have met the strange child.

ETA Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King may be familiar to many, having served as the inspiration for Tchaikovsky's famous ballet. However, the ballet was based on a French retelling of the story, and Hoffmann's German original is rarely translated in its entirety. This edition of the complete German classic, in a new translation by the eminent translator Anthea Bell, displays the full range of the author's quirky power of invention. It is published here alongside another lesser-known tale, The Strange Child, in which a young brother and sister meet an unusual playmate in the woods and have to deal with a sinister new schoolmaster.

The Nutcracker and the Golden Pot, The transformation of the venerable Nutcracker ballet begun by Sendak and choreographer Kent Stowell for the 1983 Pacific Northwest Ballet production is carried through, in this volume, with Ralph Manheim's translation of the original Hoffmann story, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" - including its central tale-within-a-tale, "The Story of the Hard Nut." Psychoanalytically-aware adults have long recognized the *** symbolization of elderly Godfather Drosselmeier, prepubescent Clara (here Marie), and "the Nutcracker." But the ballet has no apparent dramatic shape - consisting in essence of one pantomime scene (the Christmas Eve party at the Stahlbaums) and two scenes of almost pure dancing (Clara/Marie's magical journey and the delights of Candytown). And children's books of The Nutcracker have been "the story of the ballet." Integrating Sendak's designs for the scenery and costumes, the present work retains the sense of a theatrical production - but not of a spectacle or delectation. "The Story of the Hard Nut," which Drosselmaier tells Marie after the Mouse King's defeat of Nutcracker's army (from the Nutcracker's advent, all darkly shaded), features the transformation of infant Princess Pirlipat into a hideous nutcracker baby - a Sendakian theme-of-themes - who can be restored to herself only by eating the kernel of the hard nut Krakakut, which can only be cracked by an unshaven youth; and the last-minute crimp in this process, by vengeful Madame Mouserinks, sets the stage for the main-plot annihilation of the Mouse King, the restoral of the Nutcracker to his youthful, unshaven self, and his betrothal to Marie. Some wordless pictorial pages carry the major ballet passages; but most of the illustrations consist of marginal drawings. It is perhaps better so: the one full-page depiction of a dramatic scene in "The Story of a Hard Nut" looks paste-boardy, more ludicrous than horrifying. (In vapid, naturalistic color, Sendak always loses force.) Elsewhere the pictorial matter helps to bring out the many facets and dimensions of the story, and its stage associations - but, to everyone's credit, the story takes precedence here. Among the greatest writers of fantasy and a major figure in late German Romanticism, Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1776–1822) created an extraordinary world of fantasy, poetry, and the supernatural. Remarkable characters come vividly to life in imaginative tales that move from the firm ground of reality to ambiguity, mystery, and romance. This volume contains two of his best tales. "The Nutcracker," a charming Christmas story which has become a perennial favorite for young and old alike, presents such memorable characters as the beloved Godpapa Drosselmeier, the brave Nutcracker, and the evil Mouse-King. "The Golden Pot," Hoffmann's first major literary work (and widely regarded as his finest), successfully blends reality and fantasy in a story that details the invasion of supernatural forces into everyday life. A master of allegory and symbolism, Hoffmann has long been popular in Europe. This volume now introduces a portion of his remarkable work to an even wider audience., Paperback, Label: Dover Publications, Dover Publications, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 2012-03-14, Freigegeben: 2012-02-15, Studio: Dover Publications, Verkaufsrang: 1700612.
