It looked like a beetle, or maybe some kind of cockroach, but surely not with yellow and black markings: although the colours did seem to keep changing. Entomology was never a strong subject for Rab. It had, he thought, the usual number of legs and what looked like folded wings. An insect no doubt, but weird and quite large. Probably a migrant creepy-crawly brought this far north due to the effects of global warming, but certainly not what you'd expect to encounter by the River Tweed, in the Scottish Borders. In a way it resembled a stonefly nymph, or 'gadger' as it was known locally, but it was too late in the season to be one of them, and it was much too large anyway. Nevertheless, it really fascinated him as it boldly strutted around the small campfire under the old bridge. If it was a gadger and he captured it, then he could use it for bait. He certainly hadn't had any luck with the imitation flies. Strangely, it didn't seem afraid of him, even though he chased it with a twig. Neither did it seem menacing, but it did appear to be studying him as much as he was watching it. He flicked a pebble at it. The small stone seemed to go straight through it, or was it able to move faster than his eyes could follow? He lunged at it but it was much too quick, and was apparently teasing him by refusing to leave the area. It just waited for him to pounce, then moved slightly to a safer position. His attempts to ignore it also failed miserably. He could feel it following his every move, whilst assessing him at the same time. Then he tried stabbing at it with a larger twig but it dodged every thrust he made, and still didn't try to escape. What the hell was it, and why was it so interested in him? Sod off, or you'll end up as bait, he shouted. Quite suddenly, images began to run through Rab's mind, like videotape alternating between fast forward and reverse. His head was spinning and buzzing, making him feel giddy. Thinking he might just be a bit drunk, or more likely going crazy, he returned to his seat by the fire and perked himself up with another whisky. That seemed to calm him down, so he sat quietly staring at the flames, earnestly trying to keep his head clear. After a short respite, the uncanny thoughts returned. Visions and memories raced through his mind. He closed his eyes tightly and tried to concentrate specifically on the natural sounds around him, but that didn't help. Pictures of his recent and distant past flickered across in front of him, totally regardless of his efforts to shut them out. Images of his wife and children, the old band, his office, parents, friends and thousands of other things long forgotten were all there, passing in front of him. Could this be what it's like for a drowning man as his past life flashes before him as he dies? Looks like I'm about to 'pop my clogs', one way or another - This was all getting too much. Even with his eyes shut tight and his hands clasped firmly over his ears Rab still couldn't block out the pictures and sounds. He was in the process of stemming a scream when the videotape stopped abruptly. His heart was still thumping but his vision was at last clear. He was grateful that the normality of the rest of his surroundings: the rippling water in the river, the patter of rain on the bridge overhead, and the crackling of the fire, all helped him hold on to reality. Then he heard a splash in the river, near the opposite bank where a small fish was either feeding or playing around. The relief was so immense that, oddly, he felt like crying. What the Hell had possessed him to come fishing tonight of all nights? This is all Liz's fault. After all, if things had been normal at home he wouldn't even be here. If he'd had any sense, he would have accepted the situation manfully and gone over to Loanhead to see his children Katie and Bobby, and his parents. Well, he hadn't. He was here and would have to deal with this self-imposed situation alone, until Peter came to collect him at daybreak. Lifting his head from his hands he slowly scanned the area, but there was no sign of his visitor. Was his over-active imagination up to its old tricks? Was he caught up in a nightmare? This is bloody ridiculous.
