This is a personal selective account of the history of England and the British Isles from the medieval to the modern period. The justification for it to be written and read is that it puts most events and people into chronological order, which is uncommon. It uses the long-held allegory that the world is nothing but a stage for players to parade on until their final bow. As the stage revolves another cast appears, having apparently learnt nothing from what has gone before. The two masks reflect comedy and tragedy equally, but most players experienced both but not in equal measure. The common people, the spear carriers at the back, started off subservient to a ruling class and at the final curtain were still in that position. For them it is mainly a tragedy. For the rulers things were somewhat better, but all lived in the shadow of diseases that they did not understand and could not fight, their lives were equally short. There was no certainty that children would outlive their parents, whatever your rank. For the writer and director there were many challenges. How to present the thrill of discovery and invention, the passion of religion, the gaiety of the Regency ballroom while others starved, the cruelty of slavery and war, the despair of failure, the hardships of explorers? These are better portrayed in fiction and on-screen. Those authors are far more talented than humble chroniclers, but each has their place. The simple device of presenting the story as a play made writing it remarkably easy. Perhaps after all we really are just puppets on the end of strings! , Kindle Edition, Format: Kindle eBook, Label: Headington Publishing, Headington Publishing, Product group: eBooks, Published: 2015-04-17, Release date: 2015-04-17, Studio: Headington Publishing, Sales rank: 3860944.
