Dennis Ekstedt's works on canvas confront the viewer with evocative images of glimmering illuminated cities. While not landscapes so much as 'earthscapes', the works negotiate nonetheless landscape's traditional quest to identify humanity's relationship to nature. Ekstedt's paintings investigate and celebrate, through a palpable beauty, a contemporary version of that query. “My work refers in part to the uncontrolled growth found in many cities around the globe. This kind of unchecked growth is an aspect of cities I find both dynamic and troubling. I want it to be unclear whether my paintings depict either utopian or dystopian landscapes. Ideally they would suggest both simultaneously. I find it ironic that as cities and human-made structures continue to encroach on the natural world they begin to mimic its arbitrary and chaotic nature." Dennis Ekstedt lives and works in Montreal. He was the Eastern Canada winner of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition in 2002 and his paintings are included in many public, corporate and private collections. Paperback, Edition: Bilingual, Label: McClure Gallery, McClure Gallery, Product group: Book, Published: 2015-03-16, Studio: McClure Gallery.
