The books follow, in chronological order. For printers whose period of activity ends before I540, full title transcriptionsa re given. For the later printers, titles are standardized. Although a great deal of energy has been expended on the typographical minutiae of the transcriptions, the real value of the work lies in the contents notes, which name dedicatees, authors of prefatory verses or appended texts, persons on the fringes of the book world who would be lost in a more cursory examination. In the midst of the statistics, there is also a regard for the personality of the printer; in the routine progress of a contents note, it is pleasant to find a full quotation of a printer's apology to the reader..Each printer is represented in plates of specimen pages at the end of the volume.
