Von Händler/Antiquariat, Wykeham Books [162256], LONDON, United Kingdom.
Limited edition of 750 numbered copies. Cloth, gilt device on front board, Folio, 189, [1] pp, plates (some colour). 74 entries. From the preface by Michael Wittock "The collection of fine bindings that I have formed during the last twenty years makes no claim to be representative of the history of bookbinding ornament in all periods or in all countries. As I am naturally more drawn to Latin than to German culture I have been principally interested in the evolution of styles, first in Italy, then in France. Indifference to scientific principles of selection was coupled, in my case, with a deliberate decision only to acquire volumes whose beauty appealed to my aesthetic sense. Thus I became aware of tbe attraction of the gilt, or sometimes silvered, ornament of the Renaissance. Having had the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the restrained gilding of Italian bindings of the first half of the sixteenth century, I realised that the art of forwarding and finishing a binding, like the other decorative arts, could just as legitimately be considered an art in its own .My new bibliophilic passion soon induced me to enlarge my field of action to include French bindings of the High Renaissance. Their exuberant variety of decoration evokes the intellectual enthusiasms of privileged collectors: kings and queens, royal favourites, courtesans, soldiers, lawyers, financiers, prelates, even rich students." Contents include: Preface; Italian 16th-Century Bookbindings, by Anthony Hobson; La reliure en France au XVIe siècle, Paul Culot; Index of authors; Index of principal binders; Index of owners; Index des provenances. Copy No. 13. Near Fine in Very Good dustwrapper.
