The world's largest programme of overseas aid, Japan's, is helping to destroy what remains of the Earth's tropical forests, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The organisation, formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund, makes this accusation in a report, Timber from the South Seas*, which aims to present the first accurate overview of Japan's use of tropical forests. Its findings will add to a wave of growing unease about the environmental impact of the Pounds sterling 6.5 billion that Japan intends to spend this year on overseas aid. Japan is well known as the world's largest importer of tropical timber, accounting in 1986 for 29 per cent of international trade in tropical timber. Most of this went not as the disposable chopsticks of popular legend (the WWF says these are made mainly from imported softwood), but became plywood for Japan's booming construction industry.
