ANONYMOUS HEROES - D-DAY PORTRAITS REFLECTIONS ON THE 6TH OF JUNE It is very difficult to delineate the memories of men who participated in History's greatest invasion. First, my father's experiences. Together we travelled to Normandy and his descriptions became images. There, a massive effort and sacrifice by all the men involved. Men, who, with destiny's grace come back to the battlefields and cemeteries as history's witness. One's imagination runs wild seeing their faces confronting the places and people who changed their lives forever. The horror of war and the joy of the liberated, two intangible sensations which have been my inspiration for this photo essay. The veterans of all nations who return for the ceremonies come with a solemn respect for their fallen comrades and with the enigma of why them and not me. My photographs of veterans and visiting soldiers, portraits, and landscapes of the monuments and cemeteries were taken at the D-Day anniversaries, June 6th, in the years 1984 to 2013. During the many years of photographing in Normandy, I have made some remarkable encounters with veterans of all nationalities. In befriending these men, they felt comfortable enough to share their D-Day experiences with me. Here are their words, words that don't always come easy, for even with the decades of time that have passed, the horrors of war are still present. In taking these photographs, I learned a lot about human nature, about society and about myself. They are the perception of a reality that illuminates and ricochets our temporal existence. My images are not a justification, or a glorification of war, but a regard on an historical event that determined liberty in Europe to this day. Ian Patrick, Flexibound, Groupe de produits: Book, Publié: 2009.
