Outside the Comfort Zone: Traditionally, privacy studies have focused on liberal democratic societies of the global West, whereas non-democratic contexts have played a marginal role in the discussion of the private and public spheres, not in the least because of political stances of the Cold War era. This volume explores constructions of privacy in late socialist societies by attending to immanent perspectives on the private sphere behind the Iron Curtain and thereby invites to rethink the Cold War rhetoric in regard to socialist landscapes.Contributions on the Soviet Union, late socialist Poland, Romania, Hungary, Lithuania, and East Germany elucidate ideas of privacy that, on the one hand, were culturally, economically and politically specific, and on the other hand, overcame national borders and left an imprint across the Eastern Bloc. They uncover national, group, and individual visions of late socialism and the ways to integrate these visions into everyday life, which continuously re-drew the borders between the private and the public spheres. By looking at triggers and traces of these transformations in official and unofficial discourses of the era, this volume reveals the multi-faceted nature of late socialisms and the private/public distinction.
