Die Libretti bildeten bislang eine der letzten veritablen Lücken der Goethephilologie. Goethe hat sich zeitlebens produktiv mit den europäischen Opernformen auseinandergesetzt. Zu den im Anhang gelisteten mehr als 200 ihm nachweislich bekannten Opern zählen die einflußreichsten Werke der Zeitspanne 1760-1830. Die Libretti (darunter u.A. »Erwin und Elmire«, »Claudine von Villa Bella«, »Lila«, »Jery und Bätely«, »Die Mystifizierten«, »Der Zauberflöte zweyter Theil«, »Der Löwenstuhl«, »Feraddedin und Kolaila«, »Pandora«, »Des Epimenides Erwachen«) bilden ein umfangreiches Werkkorpus, das entgegen der bislang vorherrschenden Forschungsmeinung eng mit den kanonischen Werken verknüpft ist. Die Goethe bekannten Opern und ihre librettistischen Verfahrensweisen fungieren als Matrix der Textanalysen. Im Ergebnis erweisen sich Goethes Libretti als so komplexe wie avantgardistische Konzeptionen, die in einer rasanten Entwicklungslinie die zeitgenössisch vor allem in Italien und Frankreich entstandene Verfahrensweisen aufgreifen. Methodik und Ergebnisse der Analysen zeigen ihre ganze Tragweite bei der Anwendung auf »Faust«: So läßt sich der häufig angedeutete Einfluß des Musiktheaters auf »Faust II« erstmals textanalytisch präzise nachweisen. Die Oper erweist sich darüber hinaus als folgenreiche und bislang in ihrer Bedeutung noch nicht erschlossene konzeptionelle Grundlage der Faustdichtung.
