Unfortunately, whilst my caligraphy has been described by partial friends as picturesque, by the world at large it is declared to be execrable; and as (a caligraphist having no honour in his own household) I regret to say my family share in the latter view of the case, if their pleasure is to be secured, I must necessarily appeal to the art we owe to the intellect of Gutenberg and the enterprise of Caxton. This being so, to whom can I dedicate these scribblings but to you? To your wise suggestion that an over-wrought brain would find its needed relief in strange scenes and novel surroundings, I owe the last few weeks of travel - to your ever thoughtful and considerate kindness that the time has proved a long delight, and that no care has marred the pleasures of a journey never to be forgotten. To the world you are known as the King of Tourists, as one who has so perfected the facilities for travel, that the enterprise, science, and labour required in their accomplishment are forgotten in the enjoyment of the perfection attained.
