He is said to have been born in Edinburgh about 1568. After having taken orders in the Scotch Church, and holding a professorship of moral philosophy in his native city, we are informed that he proceeded to Leyden, studied physic there under Heurnius, and obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He then returned, as we are told, to his former profession, and officiated as a clergyman in London, until his political zeal urged him to the composition of the book which became the source of his melancholy celebrity. It is entitled ´´An Appeal to the Parliament, or Sion´s Plea against the Prelacy,´´ and is a quarto volume of 179 pages. It is evidently the production of no ordinary talent, and, being written in a tone of fervent and bigoted zeal, was eminently calculated to advance the cause of Antiprelacy amongst enthusiasts. In every page may be traced the workings of a bold and vigorous intellect; the style is energetic and commanding, full of illustrative comparisons, many of them historical, many the produce of a fertile imagination, but by far the greater number derived from that storehouse of Puritanical illustration, the Old Testament.
