The following pages were written at the close of the Agnostic Controversy which was waged beyond the Atlantic during the first six months of the present year, and were originally intended for magazine publication. The consideration, however, that their circulation would thus be limited by the subscription list of a magazine, suggested an independent publication in the present form. The tone advisedly adopted for the magazine has been retained, as also has been the personal pronoun, first person singular, (which, in the mouth of an agnostic has, with a more decided dogmatism and more magisterial air, usurped the place of the long familiar and harmless editorial we). Should the reader find them offensive, the apology must be that both have been deliberately borrowed from the agnostic school.
