The author has been engaged during all of these years, and more, in teaching the medical art, and has thus had occasion to note very particularly, in the interest of his pupils, the changes - even the revolutions - in opinion and practice that have taken place within the compass of two generations. The effect of this upon his own mind has been that he has never found it necessary, or expedient, to formulate for teaching purposes a scheme of medical doctrines, a system or general theory of medicine, such as may be found abundantly in the records of the past.
