Mr. Rand in his botanical researches in the Valley of the Amazon was necessarily brought into intimate relations with these tribes, and being frequently entertained at different points with the narrations of these fables, was so struck with the remarkable similarity of the language of each narrator, that he determined to reproduce it verbatim. He has kindly presented us with a translation of his notes and the fables are now for the first time committed to type, in the hope and belief that they may prove interesting from their very naivete.
