Excerpt from Pearce Genealogy: Being the Record of the Posterity of Richard Pearce, an Early Inhabitant of Portsmouth, in Rhode Island, Who Came From England, and Whose Genealogy Is Traced Back to 972 For the past fifteen years the undersigned has been at work on the Pearce (however spelled) genealogy. First a genealogical record of the posterity of John Pers, of Watertown, 1630, my ancestor, was published. Then followed a record of the descendants of Sergt. Thomas Peirce, of Charleston. While collecting material for these families much valuable data was Obtained for the present work and another volume, the posterity of Capt. Michael Peirce, soon to be issued. The task of compiling the present work has been much more arduous than that of either the two other books. A vast amount of correspondence has been conducted with persons bear ing the name, and with others, descendants of Pearces. Rhode Island town records have been examined, as have the wills and inventories of estates of deceased members of the family, all in volving an untold amount of labor. The work of compiling was prolonged on account of business which could not be neglected, and nearly all of the work upon this volume has been done during evenings after other duties had been finished.
