CONTENTS. PAGE PREFACE i NOTES ON LORD MACAULAYS CONNECTION WITH EDINBURGH iii BIOGRAPHIES FRANCIS ATTERBURY 3 JOHN BUNYAN 27 OLIVER GOLDSMITH 51 SAMUEL JOHNSON 77 WILLIAM PITT 137 PREFACE. THE following Biographies are selected from the Encyclopaedia Britannica. It was intended to publish the contributions of Lord Macaulay in a separate volume when the work was com- pleted but as the lamented and unexpected death of the noble author cuts off the possibility of any further contributions, it has been con- sidered advisable to publish them at once. It is to be regretted that they have not been again revised by the author as he intended, before they appeared in a separate volume but as they were carefully corrected by him when passing through the press for the Encyclopaedia, there is ground for believing that they would have required little alteration. When these articles were written for the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Lord Macaulay had ceased to write for the reviews or other periodicals, thongh often earnestly solicited to do so. It is entirely to his friendly feeling that I am indebted for those literary gems, which could not have been purchased with money and it is but justice to his memory that I should record, as one of the many instances of the kindness and generosity of his heart, that he made it a stipulation of his contributing to the Encyclopaedia that remune- ration should not be so much as mentioned and I know it was his intention, had he enjoyed sufficient health and opportunity, to have even increased the number of his contributions. Some of the circumstances attending Lord Macaulays connection with Edinburgh excited much interest, and I embrace this opportunity of giving ashort notice of the transactions of which I was cognizant, with extracts from his letters and speeches. EDINBURGH, FEBRUARY 1860. ADAM BLACK NOTES ON LORD MACAULAYS CONNECTION WITH EDINBURGH. I WAS first introduced to LORD MACAULAY in the summer of 1839, and had the honour of his unin- terrupted friendship till his death. During his connection with Edinburgh, I was his frequent correspondent, and had an opportunity of learning his views on many of the public events of the time his opinions are so just and instructive, and so elo- quently expressed, that I am led to believe that extracts from his letters, and from his speeches on public measures, especially as affecting Scotland and Edinburgh, will not be uninteresting. When Mr. Abercromby, one of our representa- tives, was called to the Upper House, andwe had to look out for a successor, our attention was drawn to the eloquent advocate of parliamentary reform and ardent friend of civil and religious liberty, T. B. Macaulay and I was authorized by the Liberal Productinformatie:Taal: Engels;Afmetingen: 17x216x140 mm;Gewicht: 389,00 gram;ISBN10: 140672176X;ISBN13: 9781406721768; Engels | Paperback | 2007.
