If the revival now in the country is of God, it will be followed by such effects as will prove it such; the publichouses will become less numerous than our chapels;, the debts remaining on our places of worship will be wiped away; and day-schools will be established to instruct the ignorant. In a word, if it is a religious revival, it will also be a social revival. Such were the words of an eminent Welsh minister, on a very public occasion, when preaching in the presence of many thousands of hearers, and amongst them some hundreds of ministers, elders, and deacons. In a recent number of a Welsh newspaper, there is an excellent letter from a clergyman, in which he says, What is the revival? Repentance for sin, faith in the only Saviour, peace with God, joy in the Holy Ghost, and newness of life. These are its peculiar characteristics. Some imperfections may be found in connexion with it; but they are not of much importance when compared with its good effects. Who, that knows anything of true religion, will deny, that the revival in Ireland and in Wales, is the work of God! The Great Teacher has said, By their fruits ye shall know them; shall men gather figs from thorns, or grapes from thistles? The good tree will bring forth good fruit; and we can only judge of the character of this marvellous movement by the effect it produces on the hearts, lives, and general habits of those who profess to feel its influence.
