Looking on a poem as the enactment of a heuristic process, they aim to relate, more closely than has hitherto been attempted, the sign-quality of a text with the experience which that sign expresses, with the existing context of signs which it remakes, and with the forces within the human subject which instigate that making. Thus introduced, the notion of poetic knowledge is discussed by contributors from a number of European countries and from North America. Their comments, founded for the most part in an analysis of individual texts, range over poems, novels and stories from Sterne and Blake to Wallace Stevens, Duncan and Ashbery.
