Published without a dust jacket. -- A Lexical Concordance to the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, Volume Two: E-L (A Complete Concordance to the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer XIII,2; Supplement Series III,2; Alpha-Omega, Reihe C, Englische Autoren 1/2) -- The "Lexical Concordance" is based on the text of "The Riverside Chaucer", which has been used by Akio Oizumi for his "Complete Concordance to the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer. The Riverside edition includes "Poems Not Ascribed to Chaucer in the Manuscripts" and all three parts of "The Romaunt of the Rose". The problems of establishing Chaucer's authorship of the various works and of the criteria for their inclusion in the Riverside edition are discussed by the General Editor in his introductory essay on "The Canon and Chronology of Chaucer's Works" as well as by each editor in his or her textual notes. -- 5 volumes of "A Lexical Concordance to the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer" are a sequel to "A Complete Concordance" edited by A.Oizumi. The ten-volume "Complete Concordance" as a general concordance is intended to allow students to undertake full and systematic studies of the text and language of Chaucer for the first time and to have great potential as a standard research tool for English medievalists, historians of the language and ideas. The Complete Concordance is also intended to allow syntacticians to see common and high-frequency words in all their contexts. The Complete Concordance is unlemmatized. Main entries are not gathered together under dictionary headwords and, as is customary in computer-generated concordances, homographs are not separated into their discrete meanings. As T.H. Howard-Hill justly asserts, "Concordances precede lexicons; to a great extent they provide the raw data for them. A concordance gives an index to the data, not to its interpretation; the interpretation is supplied by the individual user with his special perspective and particular inquiry." A "Lexical Concordance" is lemmatized. All the morphologically varying forms of a word are gathered under a convenient heading as in most dictionaries. Lemmatization is a matter for a dictionary, not for a concordance. "A lemmatized concordance," as Ashley Crandell Amos has remarked in her suggestive paper, "where all the spellings of each word are brought together under a headword form, would be extremely helpful, and will be a by-product of the Dictionary itself." A lemmatized concordance to the works of Chaucer is properly divided into two parts: A Lexical Concordance and A Grammatical Concordance, which will lead directly to "A Chaucer Grammar". The former lies halfway between the unlemmatized complete concordance and the dictionary. Books.
