Sein primäres Interesse galt der Rhetorik, die er als wichtig für die theologische Ausbildung ansah. In seiner hochgeschätzten Philosophy of Rhetoric (1776, 2 Bände) nahm er zentrales Gedankengut der klassischen Rhetorik wieder auf, entwickelte jedoch zugleich weiterführende Konzepte. Campbell erste Publikation, A Dissertation on Miracles (1762) ging aus einer Predigt auf einer Synode hervor. Im Widerspruch zu Humes Essay „On Miracles" vertrat er die Ansicht, daß Wunder durchaus durch das Zeugnis anderer beglaubigt werden können und daß die Wunder der christlichen Religion durch solche Zeugnisse genügend beglaubigt seien. Seine Schrift wurde als wertvoller Beitrag zur theologischen Diskussion der Zeit geschätzt. Sie erlangte große Popularität in Großbritannien und wurde bald ins Französische, Niederländische und Deutsche übersetzt.
