L/940 S. mit 1 Frontispiz, 6 Blättern und 1 Faltkarte In der Zeit des großen intellektuellen Aufbruchs der Renaissance begann man auch in Frankreich, sich intensiv mit den Monumenten zu befassen, die an die römische Vergangenheit erinnerten. Zu dieser Bewegung gehört auch Nicolas Bergier (1567 – 1623), Anwalt am Amtsgericht (siège présidial) in Reims, der 1622 eine „Geschichte der Hauptstraßen des Römischen Reiches" veröffentlichte. Im Jahre 1728 erschien in Brüssel eine zweite, verbesserte und vermehrte Auflage dieses Werks, die hier im Nachdruck wieder vorgelegt wird. Bergier war bereits mit einem Panegyricus auf den 1610 verstorbenen, hochverehrten und idealisierten König Heinrich IV. hervorgetreten, in welchem er die Reiterstatue des Königs, die im Jahre 1614 auf dem Pont Neuf in Paris aufgestellt wurde, mit dem von dem römischen Dichter Statius (silv. 1,1) beschriebenen Reiterstandbild des Kaisers Domitian in Rom parallelisierte. In seinem Werk über die römischen Militärstraßen betont Bergier, dass diese Verkehrswege von der Hauptstadt ausgehend bis in die entferntesten Teile des Reiches führten. Die Muße der Legionssoldaten und der Provinzbevölkerung sei durch die Klugheit der Kaiser gebannt, die diese beiden Gruppen heranziehen, um die Straßen anzulegen. Mit Wagen und durch das Wechseln der Pferde unterwegs würden die Befehle des Kaisers rasch in die abgelegensten Gegenden seines Reiches getragen. Die Armeen bewegten sich sogar im Winter schnell von einer Reichsgrenze zur anderen. Die Magistrate erreichten von Rom aus leicht die Provinzen, um ihren Regierungsgeschäften nachzugehen. Schiffe und Wagen ächzten unter dem Gewicht der Waren, die zur Versorgung der Bevölkerung gebraucht würden. Jedes Hindernis sei ausgeschaltet, denn überall, wo es nötig ist, seien Brücken errichtet worden. Meilensteine dienten der Orientierung, Hermen dem Schutz der Reisenden. Auch die Seewege, von Hafen zu Hafen, von Küste zu Küste, werden behandelt. Zahlreiche Bilder und Karten veranschaulichen das Geschilderte. Sogar eine in Kupfer gestochene Nachzeichnung der Peutinger´schen Karte, in der die Namen und Entfernungsangaben typographisch eingetragen sind, wurde in Gestalt einer fast 2 m langen Faltkarte dem Werk beigegeben. Die Beschäftigung mit den archäologischen Zeugnissen und schriftlichen Quellen über die römischen Fernstraßen ist für Bergier nicht Selbstzweck. Nachdrücklich hält er der Gegenwart einen Spiegel vor. Die französische Krone solle die Möglichkeiten nutzen, die ein solches Straßensystem für die Effektivität der Herrschaftsausübung und Kriegsführung verspricht, vor allem solle man Finanzmittel dafür bereitstellen. Die Suche des beginnenden Absolutismus nach Zentralisierung und Intensivierung der Herrschaft orientiert sich am Vorbild der kaiserzeitlichen Antike.
