ABT.: MATERIALIEN UND DOKUMENTE Band 115 Der lutherische Theologe Johann Jakob Köthen hat 1738 ein Kompendium der metaphysischen Prinzipien der Wolffschen Philosophie verfasst und zusammen mit der lateinischen Übersetzung von Leibniz´ Monadologie „propter argumenti similitudinem", wegen der sachlichen Ähnlichkeit, in einem einzigen Band veröffentlicht. Im Anhang hat er noch zwei Schriften in Form von „Epistolae" zur Verteidigung und Unterstützung der Wolffschen Philosophie hinzugefügt. Beide betonen deren Vortrefflichkeit und Nützlichkeit: der erste Brief auf Latein und der andere auf Italienisch, jeweils mit verschiedener Argumentation. Köthen versucht, eine verkürzte und einfachere Darstellung der metaphysischen Prinzipien zu liefern, die in Wolffs umfangreicher „Lateinischen Ontologie" enthalten sind. Und dies mit der erklärten Absicht, die Übereinstimmung der Leibniz-Wolffschen Philosophie sowohl mit der natürlichen als auch mit der geoffenbarten Theologie zu beweisen. Diese Philosophie kann also nicht nur von den Lutheranern ohne Bedenken vertreten werden, sie kann sogar wegen ihrer Methode von größter Nützlichkeit sein bei der Verteidigung der Religion gegen die Einwürfe und Argumente, die ihr häufig entgegengebracht werden.
