Dan, is this book going to provide a substantial, coherent and timely contribution to CSCW or is it just going to be a ragbag of papers from several meetings stuck together? The latter, of course, Colston. However, . . . . . . and the "However" was rather long and technical, but not substantially different in overall content from that of this pref ace. Most of the papers contained in this book were initially presented at meetings organized by the UK's Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) Special Interest Group in 1991, but the book is not a proceedings, whatever the above quo tation suggests. Readers will immediately notice that, unlike typical proceedings, all the references are placed together at the end of the book and that there is a substantial index: the hall mark of all proper, technical books of quality. If you choose to delve further than this preface, you will find that each chapter is cross-referenced, thus you also gain a coherent structure across chapters - an advantage traditionally associated with high quali ty single-author books. Furthermore, turning apparent disadvantage to advantage, while single-author books must inevitably present the idiosyncratic perspective of their author, in this book, and appropriately for a young area such as CSCW, you will be presented with the views of a dozen CSCW experts who all have considerable, hard-won experience, gained over many years.Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993. 1993. xxii, 196 S. 7 SW-Abb.,. 235 mmVersandfertig in 3-5 Tagen, Softcover.

CSCW in Practice: an Introduction and Case Studies (1993)
ISBN: 9783540197843 bzw. 3540197842, in Deutsch, Springer Feb 1993, Taschenbuch, neu, Nachdruck.
This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware - This book provides an introduction to both the technical and human aspects of CSCW, from the perspectives of the technology, the users, and the user interface. Most of the material was initially presented at meetings organized by the UK's CSCW Special Interest Group in 1991 (the chapters are coherently cross-referenced and indexed). The authors examine what has been done, or can be done, with existing technology, and discuss CSCW, not as a set of technologies, but rather as a set of issues. The book is primarily about real CSCW, not arcane academic theories of CSCW. Particular topics such as collaborative writing, conferencing, office automation, decision support, process modelling, and medicine, are covered by case studies. The first three chapters provide an introduction to CSCW from three different perspectives. The next three chapters discuss, using case studies, the most researched and used area of CSCW - collaborative authoring - and propose some novel and informative 'solutions' to the problems encountered. The remaining five chapters cover a broad range of CSCW applications. The final chapter describes a CSCW system that was tested, and failed, in a commercial application. While many of the problems appear obvious and trivial in retrospect, it is hoped that those in industry will agree with this accurate portrayal of the real world and that academies will be more practical in their proposals to their industrial collaborators. Although CSCW may be considered a 'young' field, it has existed as something recognisably different from its 'parent' fields of research for at least a decade. This book will be of value to those who are relatively new to CSCW, both students and the more qualified, and to those with greater knowledge, because it collects and reports practical experience, which, at present, is in short supply in accessible form. 224 pp. Englisch.
