In that year the idea for a conference to be sponsored jointly by the Society for Reformation Research and the Verein für Reformationsgeschichte was born (nee the contribution to this volume by Thomas A. Brady, jr.). Four years later, several members from each society formed a planning committee to turn that original idea into a social reality. The members of that committee were Bernd Moeller, Heinz Schilling, Thomas Brady, Scott Hendrix, Robert Kolb, and William Maltby. They were sonn joined by Hartmut Lehmann, the Director of the German Historical Institute in Washington, who invited the societies to hold their conference in the new quarters of the Institute and served as coordinator of local arrangements. The societies are grateful to Dr. Lehmann and his staff for the hospitality which they afforded to more than one hundred persons who gathered for the conference from September 25 to September 30, 1990.
