Stuttgart: Belser Verlag, 1991. Limited edition. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good. Limited edition, this no. 640 of 1000 copies, 1991, hardcover with red cloth boards in dust jacket, Folio, 248pp., illustrated in color and b&w. Book VG+ with faint dampstain to bottom of boards and spine, binding tight, text clean and unmarked. DJ VG with rubbing, mild edgewear. Text in German. THIS LARGE, HEAVY BOOK WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING FEES. From John Williams' personal library, former professor of medieval art and architecture at the University of Pittsburgh. Saint Beatus of Liébana (c. 730 - c. 800) was a monk, theologian and geographer from the former Duchy of Cantabria and Kingdom of Asturias, in modern Cantabria, northern Spain, who worked and lived in the Picos de Europa mountains of the region of Liébana. He is best remembered today as the author of the Commentary on the Apocalypse, which is often referred to simply as the Beatus. The historical significance of the Commentary is made even more pronounced since it included a world map, which offers a rare insight into the geographical understanding of the post-Roman world.
