La langue mougole était alors employée en Maud chourie dans les rapports diplomatiques. Cependant le contact de la civilisation chinoise ne fut point sans effet. En 1599 l'empe reur mandchou T aï - tsou chargea deux lettrés de créer un alphabet pour SA nation. Ceux-ci le formèrent sur le modèle du mongol lequel avait été lui-même modelé sur l'alphabet ouïgour, emprunté au syriaque des prêtres nestoriens. Cet alphabet perfectionné par ordre et sur les indications de l'empereur kian-loung, est encore en usage aujourd'hui. Cette invention eut certainemeht une heureuse influence civilisa trios; mais ce fut la conquête de la Chine (eu 1644) et ses resul tats qui firent du Mandchou une langue littéraire. Aussitôt après 011 se mit à traduire en grand nombre les livres chinois et à composer simultanément dans les deux langues.
