Dieter Buchhart, Books, Art and Architecture, Jean-michel Basquiat, • Accompanies a major double exhibition on Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele - two artists that died too young but created masses of work over the course of a decade, at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, from 2nd October 2018 to 4th January 2019 • Comprises drawings, gouaches and paintings sourced from private collections and museums all over the world In 2018 the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, will host exhibitions on two of the greatest artists of the 20th century - Egon Schiele, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Both exhibitions will have the same curator and will be held at the same time. The shows will illustrate exactly what it is that linked the two artists: line, and the use of expressive force. In Schiele's work the evolution of his unique, idiosyncratic uses of line provides a visceral element of expression that allows the viewer to trace his artistic development over the course of distinctive periods within their bodies of work. This, the catalogue of the Egon Schiele exhibition, concentrates on themes of the body and portraits, through drawings and watercolors, showcasing Schiele's incredible expressive force. The role of the line thus serves as a fascinating and illuminating point of reference and unique testament to the artist's innate and inimitable oeuvre. Egon Schiele explores the paramountcy of the line through concepts such as the ornamental line, the fragmented lines of humanity during the war years, the existential line of Expressionism, and the reconstructed line at the dawn of the First World War. Schiele relentlessly sought to formulate concrete concepts of his exploration of the figurative. The distortions, exaggerated poses, and anatomically incorrect representations of the body can be seen as a logical continuation of his artistic commitment, which was defined by breaks, shifts, and permutations. The exhibition is curated by Dr. Dieter Buchhart. The catalogue Egon Schiele comprises drawings, gouaches and paintings which have rarely or never been seen in public before. These outstanding works have been gathered from museums and private collections from all over the world and will now for the first time been presented at the Fondation Louis Vuitton.

In 2018 the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, is hosting exhibitons on two of the greatest artists of the 20th century - Egon Schiele, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Both exhibitions have the same curator, and are taking place at the same time. The shows illustrate exactly what it is that linked the two artists: line, and the use of expressive force. This, the catalogue of the Basquiat exhibition, labelled "the definitive exhibition" by its curator, brings together 120 of the artist's most important masterpieces, sourced from interational museums and private collections. With the astonishing radicalness of his artistic practice, Basquiat renewed the concept of art with enduring impact. This Basquiat retrospective centres on the idea of Basquiat's unique energetic line, his use of words, symbols, and how he integrates collage in his paintings, sculptures, objects, and large-scale drawings. The catalogue includes texts by great authors, including Paul Schimmel who tells of his meeting with Basquiat in California; Francesco Pellizi who knew Basquiat well and has not written about him for a long time; and Okwui Enwezor who talks about the Afro American identity.

Copy, paste: Basquiat's collaged Xerox paintings presage today's sampling aestheticsJean-Michel Basquiat: Xerox provides the first concentrated examination of the extraordinary body of work that the artist created using Xerox copies as his principal medium and compositional focal point. These immersive, collaged Xerox paintings epitomize Basquiat’s extraordinary instinct for visual language. Their raw, allover compositions incorporate recycled and transformed signs and markings from the artist’s everyday experiences, including motifs from his earlier artworks. The intricate web of content in this series presages the copy-paste sampling characteristic of the subsequent internet and post-internet generations, positioning Basquiat as a pioneer of the pre-digital age.Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–88) grew up in Brooklyn. Notoriety came early, from his street paintings made under the tag SAMO. Later he stormed the gallery world, and became an icon of New York's vibrant early-’80s downtown scene, a friend to and collaborator with Andy Warhol and Francesco Clemente, and the cover boy for a 1985 New York Times Magazine story on the new art market. He died following a heroin overdose at 27.
