München, Hirmer, 200 S. : zahlr. Illustr. ; 27 cm; kart. Gutes Ex. - Englisch. // INHALT : Forewords -- Introduction -- The life and career of Joseph Smith II -- The collections which Joseph Smith sold to George III -- Contemporary art collections in Venice -- The sale of Joseph Smith's collections to George III -- The late collections of Joseph Smith -- Notes -- Works referred to -- Chronological table -- Catalogue. // The immensely rich art collection of Joseph Smith (1674-1770) has until now remained largely unknown except to a few specialists concerned with Venetian eighteenth-century art. In this volume a selection of sixty of his finest drawings (by Italian masters from Raphael to Canaletto) are discussed and illustrated, in some cases for the first time. The drawings are still part of the British Royal Collection, having been purchased from Smith by King George III in 1762, together with the rest of Smith's library and collection of paintings, gems, coins, medals and illuminated manuscripts. In this book the drawings are introduced by a discussion of Smith's life and information concerning both Smith and the artists with whom he was associated. This book is the first substantial monograph in English on this crucial figure of the eighteenth-century art world. The details of his career, as banker, merchant, publisher, collector, art dealer and book seller, are poorly documented. But it is known that Smith belonged to a family of English merchants and that in around 1700 he travelled to Venice where he had soon made his name as a merchant and banker, and where he passed the remainder of his long life. Smith's international business links provided an ideal background for his activity as art collector and dealer. By the time of his appointment as British Consul in Venice in 1744 he was well on the way to becoming the foremost exporter of the work of Italian artists (both living and past) from Southern and Northern Europe. But it is Joseph Smith's own collection with which this book is principally concerned, and his relationship to other Venetian collectors. Smith's acquisitions of the works of his Venetian contemporaries were quite exceptional. A long friendship bound Smith to Canaletto, whose views of Venice, Padua and London became known across Europe very largely through Smith's activity as both dealer and publisher. Other artists with whom Smith was personally acquainted were Marco Ricci, the pre-eminent landscape painter of the Veneto, and Marco's uncle Sebastia-no, whose great religious paintings were acquired by Smith (and then George III) together with most of their preparatory studies. Ample proof of Smith's friendship with the architect and draughtsman Antonio Visentini is provided by that artist's charming series of pen and wash views of Smith's villa at Mogliano. This selection of drawings also contains superb studies of Old Masters such as Raphael. Figino, Lodovico and Agostino Carracci, Reni and Castiglione.
