The Bedford collection encompasses a variety of sculptural categories. The individual catalogue entries offer a detailed description of each antiquity, based on current research, notation of the state of preservation and an investigation of the piece within its special place in the history of Roman art and aesthetics, and all are accompanied by excellent illustrations. The treasures include a bronze statuette of a satyr, a gem of artistry which was excavated from the ruins of Pompeii in the presence of the sixth Duke. A superb range of portraits offers the reader an unprecedented opportunity for an overview within a single context of the stylistic development of portraiture during the first three centuries A. D. The series of important sarcophagi, unmatched in any other private British museum, illustrate a broad spectrum of themes.
