ISBN: 9783318023718 bzw. 331802371X, in Englisch, S Karger Ag, Taschenbuch, neu.

The traditional view of biology divides living organisms into two major groups, the eukaryotes and the prokaryotes, the former having membrane-bound organelles, the latter lacking them. However, recent research has revealed that this view is blatantly in error. This title deals with this topic.

- The traditional view of biology divides living organisms into two major groups, the eukaryotes and the prokaryotes, the former having membrane-bound organelles, the latter lacking them. However, recent research has revealed that this view is blatantly in error. A surprising diversity of organelles occurs in bacteria. Even the prokaryotic workhorse, Escherichia coli, can produce intracellular membrane structures and bleb off extracellular vesicles. Photosynthetic bacteria have chromatophores which house the photosynthetic apparatus of the cell, while magnetotactic bacteria have magnetosomes that contain strings of membrane-enclosed iron crystals for sensing the Earth s magnetic field. Planctomycetes species may contain double membrane-surrounded nuclei as well as organelles called ammoxosomes for the oxidation of ammonia. Acidocalcisomes, once thought to be unique to eukaryotes, have also been identified in bacteria. Extracellular bacterial vesicles serve functions including communication and protection. The articles presented in this JMMB written symposium bring the reader up to date on research concerning these structures and functions. 192 pp. Englisch.

P-type ATPases, involved in the maintenance of the ionic balance in almost all living organisms, have been analyzed in prokaryotes according to organismal genomic content, phylogenetic grouping, size, topology, conserved motifs and family distribution, leading to comprehensive ATPase family assignment, characterization and information integration. P-type ATPases, such as the Na+,K+-ATPase of animals, pump many different essential and toxic ions into and out of virtually all living cells on earth. Their physiological importance can not be underestimated. The authors examine over 100 fully sequenced prokaryotic genomes for members of the P-type ATPase superfamily, and compare them with each other and eukaryotic ATPases. The results reveal several novel families of these enzyme/transporters as well as their characteristics. All families are analyzed with respect to organismal genomic content, phylogenetic grouping, size, topology and conserved motifs, yielding for the first time, a detailed description of the many P-type ATPase families and their protein constituents. Scientists and students interested in molecular evolution and the importance of ion pumps to cell and organismal physiology will find this extensive compilation of P-type ATPases and their analyses an essential resource.
