The "International Conference on Computational Intelligence, Robotics and Autonomous Systems" (CIRAS) is intended to provide a common platform for knowledge dissemination among researchers working in Computational Intelligence, Robotics, Autonomous Systems and related areas. It is meant to bridge the gap between theory and practice in these topic areas as they are mutually enriching and complement each other. CIRAS 2008 is part of a series of conferences that started 2001 in Singapore. Since that time, CIRAS has become a respected platform for the exchange of scientific ideas and research results. Whereas the previous conferences have had a strong focus on the Asian region, CIRAS 2008 was now for the first time being held in Europe and aimed at bringing together researchers from all over the world to discuss developments in the key technologies of the conference. The label Computational Intelligence (CI) was coined by J.C. Bezdek in the Nineties to characterise methods that have similar properties: adaptivity, fault tolerance, computational speed and error rate optimality - while applying a sub-symbolic or numerical representation of a problem. CI comprises technologies such as fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolutionary computation. These technologies can complement each other and allow solutions of problems that manifest features that are usually assumed to have human-like intelligent characteristics. Building intelligent Robotic Systems requires an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving bringing together computer science, engineering and human sciences. Hence, the study and research on robotic systems warrant the need for bringing skills and knowledge from different disciples across. Real-world operational issues, system evolution, cooperation, modelling uncertainties, sensor fusion and intelligent control designs are only a few of the many challenging research fields. Autonomous Systems should be capable of acting independently in dynamic and unpredictable environments. Autonomous Agents are one of the most interesting and important practical directions of research and development within computer science these days. Agent technologies are being used in variety of fields and domains. CIRAS is to provide a common platform for these three areas to nurture mutual knowledge transfer thus contributing to what many people expect to become the era of intelligent machines. This volume contains all research papers, invited session papers and practical robotics papers accepted to CIRAS 2008 in Linz, Austria from June 19 - 21, 2008, organized by the Institute of Handling Devices and Robotics (IHRT) of the Vienna University of Technology and the Department of Computer Science of the TU Dortmund University. The research papers comprise the following major topic areas: - Map Building and Self-Localization - Actuator Design and Design Optimization - Low-Level Control - High-Level Control - Tracking - Mobile Robotics and Soccer Robotics The invited sessions cover - Humanoid Robotics - Mechatronics - Robot Soccer Additionally, this volume contains a section entitled "practical robotics" comprising information on hard- and software of very practical approaches and solutions of value to other practitioners.2009. 256 S. 26 Farbabb. 297 mmVersandfertig in 3-5 Tagen, Softcover.
