The Swiss Museum for Paper, Writing and Printing was accordingly opened here in 1980, in the heart of the old papermaking district. But the age of vat paper and type casting is long gone, and growing increasingly remote. In the 1980s the museum was still presenting a history "from Gutenberg to the present day". We only mention lead type now as something from "earlier". This growing distance makes it all the more impor- tant to experience the technologies that shaped our culture over several centuries. The Basel Paper Mill was renovated in 2011 and now presents itself as a museum where the history of paper, writing and printing is accessible to all our senses. This guide should be as original as the Basel Paper Mill itself. Its author, Scientific Director Martin Kluge, has succeeded in telling the many-faceted story of paper, writing and printing with revealing insights and in the light of larger interrelation- ships. The reader is taken on an exciting journey through time to explore our museum's themes in their cultural, social and societal context. I would like to offer a special word of thanks, not only to him but to all who contributed to this achievement with their expertise, by helping with the proof- reading or by providing translations. "Our museum lets visitors encounter history at close range as a sensory experience, and this guide is intended to convey an equally tangible impression. The cover, with its handmade paper and letterpress relief printing was produced and em- bossed in the paper mill before the visitors' eyes, thus incor- porating something of the museum itself. The guide could not have been created without the support of our production partners: Fischer Papier AG with its high-quality Lessebo machine-made paper, Rimoldi AG for the attractive offset printing, and Buchbinderei Schlatter AG for the masterly binding (stitched libretto-type sections). Their professional competence and unfailing cooperation were instrumental in making this volume special. The fine layout by graphic artist Sibylle Ryser captures the spirit of the entire project; she also has our sincerest thanks for her contribution. Of course, this would all be impossible without funding. Our project got off the ground at all thanks to the generous donation from Mrs. Noémi Speiser, a patron of the arts to whom we are especially grateful. I hope you will find this enjoyable reading. We look forward to your next visit.Taal: Duits;Kopieerrechten: Het kopiëren van (delen van) de pagina's is niet toegestaan ;Verschijningsdatum: augustus 2016;ISBN10: 3905142287;ISBN13: 9783905142280; Duitstalig | Ebook | 2016.
