The symposium focused on national and international politics concerning transnational activities and discussed cases mainly from Europe, but also from Africa, Asia and Latin America. This volume thus gives a good overview of the current debate on regionalism. Regionen erfüllen in den Ländern des Europarates und der Europäischen Union wesentliche Funktionen der Integration; wirtschaftliche, soziale, ökologische und rechtliche. Dies gilt im besonderen Masse für grenzüberschreitende Regionen, die häufig auf der Grundlage historischer Vorläufer gemeinsame Interessen und konkrete Zielsetzungen verfolgen. Es kommt dabei zu bilateralen und trilateralen Kooperationen, die sich einen institutionellen Rahmen schaffen. Das Symposium befasste sich mit nationalen und internationalen Politiken über gezielte transnationale Aktivitäten, aber auch mit zahlreichen Fallbeispielen in Europa.
